Journal Assigment #2 Mapping the Zeitgeist

The 1990's was the last decade of the 20th century & 2nd millennium. The '90s is considered the computer/digital age. Though technologies were predated the 1980's, it was not until the 90s that they became widely used by the general public.

  • 1990 The Persian Gulf War (2 August 1990 – 28 February 1991), also know as Operation Desert Storm (17 January 1991 – 28 February 1991) was a war waged by a U.N. authorizedcoalition force from 34 nations led by the United States, against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait.
  • Decade of the supermodel
  • Discovery of dark matter, dark energy, brown dwarfs, and first confirmation of black holes
  • MC Hammer hit mainstream success with the multi platinum album Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em.It was the first hip-hop album certified diamond by the RIAA for sales of over ten million. It remains one of the genre's all-time best-selling albums
  • DNA identification of individuals finds wide application in criminal law.
  • 1991 The Cold War ends when the Supreme Soviet meets and formally dissolves the Soviet Union.
  • Frist know case of AIDS is tracked back to the 1959
  • 1992 Civil Unrest Los Angeles Riots or South Central Riots, were sparked on April 29 over the six days following the verdict. When a jury acquitted three Los Angeles Police Department officers who beat Rodney King on videotaped.
  • The Real World is a reality television program on MTV, First broadcast in 1992, the show, which was inspired by the 1973 PBS documentary series An American Family.
  • From 1992 -97, sixty-two books were written by R.L. Stine and published by Scholastic for the Goosebumps series.

  • 1993 World Trade Center bombing occurred on February 26, when a truck bomb 1,336 lb (606 kg) urea nitrate–hydrogen gas enhanced device was detonated below the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Killed six people and injured more than a thousand.
  • Michael Jordan retires from the NBA to play minor league baseball. He returns to the NBA 17 months later.
  • 1994 Nelson Mandela served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, and was the first South African president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election.
  • 1995 The Million Man March was a gathering of social activists, held on and around the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on October 16, 1995. A leading group of civil rights activists formed the Million Man March Organizing Committee under the leadership of Dr. Benjamin Chavis. To Unite in self-help and self-defense against economic and social ills plaguing the African American community.
  • Hip hop became the best selling music genre by the mid 1990s.
  • Oklahoma bombing in Oklahoma City,. It took place in a government building. The bombing killed more than a hundred people including 15 children.
  • 1997 Princess Diana dies in a car crash in Paris on 31 August.
  • 1998 President Clinton was in impeached
  • 1999 Columbine Massare involed two senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who killed12 students, 1 teacher, and injured 21 other students. Then committed suicide.
  • The İzmit earthquake was a 7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit northwestern Turkey on .The quake lasted for 37 seconds, killing around 17,000 people and leaving approximately half a million people homeless.

In the 90's there was an eclectic mix of styles from Hip Hop to preppie, grunge to goth, to very casual. Dressing down became an accepted normally.
